Bahrain’s Shiite Scholars Decry Assault on Religious Freedom

Bahrain’s Shiite religious scholars are warning of “serious consequences” stemming from the government’s ongoing repression of the country’s Shiite community, following the latest restrictions on this month’s Ashura commemorations, including a ban on religious eulogists from participating in the observances.
In a statement issued on Monday, the scholars described the measures as “unjust and deeply provocative,” saying they constitute “a blatant violation of religious freedom, a clear breach of constitutional rights, and an infringement on the right of believers to practice their faith.”
“This systematic policy, which has continued for years, exposes the falsehood of the authorities’ claims of tolerance and respect for religions,” the statement added.
